An excellent monograph on LES

This is a very comprehensive and detailed review of the current state of the art in Large Eddy Simulation (LES). LES is a turbulence modelling technique which enjoys increasing popularity at the moment, as it promises significant advances over standard techniques such as k-e modelling. Sagaut's book begins at the conceptual beginning, discussing the mathematical formulation of scale separation and filtering, and modelling of the SGS terms in great detail. The book then moves on to cover aspects arrising from the practical implementation of LES, such as numerical methods, numerical errors, boundary conditions, and building-block applications such as jet and channels. Throughout the emphasis is on mathematical rigour : the book does not cover many real-world instances, and is rather heavy going - definitely a book for the specialist. The reference list is exhaustive and provides a good snapshot of current work. My only criticism would be that the proofreading is somewhat lax, probably because the book has been translated from French : some of the text is difficult to understand as a result. However, overall, an excellent specialist overview of the area.
