Customer Reviews:
An exceptional collection.
Tom Piccirilli is one of those writers that exist in that shadowy world somewhere in between a total small press, ‘aficionado only’ author perhaps known to only a thousand people in the world and a generally accepted writer of great skill and originality heading towards the bestseller lists. And worse still he does all that in America so over here in the UK even knowing he exists is not that easy! To discover Piccirilli you have to go searching around the obscure American publishing houses with names like Terminal Fright Press, Nightshade Books, Cemetery Dance or whatever.

Or, as here, the incomparable Delirium Press.

Let me say it loud and clear. Delirium Press are Good! In fact they are about the best cutting edge horror publisher I have ever found. The titles they bring out are some of the most powerful, exciting and fresh writing in horror today. And they do this in the most exquisite signed, numbered, limited editions. Buying a Delirium Press book makes you feel that you have bought something really worth having, even when considered just as an object – let alone the extraordinary writing usually inside it.

But anyway, Mean Sheep itself is a collection of stories and poems – with titles that perhaps reflect the content better than the main title of the book. In here you will find such things as:

The Misfit Child Grows Fat on Despair
The Whole Head is Sick, the Whole Heart Faint
At One Stride Comes the Dark
Souls, Written on the Flea
Twilight in the Room of Fathers

Reading them one is instantly hit by a feeling of a very unusual atmosphere and style. Piccirilli writes his stories as eerie, poignant dreamy miasmas. I find it hard to even begin to express this atmosphere in words. A sort of singing pain – a delicately fractured lens gazing through mist. Painfully forlorn, sometimes very erotic, quirkily off-kilter, vividly hallucinatory. A sort of hybrid between mad adolescent dreaming and a hoary American Villager out of his head on something extremely illegal! Indeed it is works like this that demonstrate clearly enough that even the label of ‘horror’ is practically impossible to define. Reading Piccirilli I am reminded perhaps more of the visionary mainstream writers like Italo Calvino or Borges – or perhaps even J G Ballard. And yet all this is seen through an extraordinary veneer of traditions and psychological symbols that could only happen with something that is very firmly rooted in horror writing. This is horror writing at its most cutting edge! These are not just tales of Vampires or psychos. These are not just depressing ‘lets look at the atrocities that humans can do’ or ‘oh dear look what a horrible world it is’ stories and other tired old horrors. This is a horror writer doing what a horror writer should – probing deep into the mind, tasting it at many levels. And also he is finding his own extremely individual style, paying respect to and referencing tradition where it is needed but not being chained to it.
