It Tells It As It Really Is (First Edition)
|
An excellent book which shows a different perspective from traditional text books on Race in Education.
As a Black education undergraduate this book was a refreshing counter balance to the typical White originated sociological and psychological theories being taught and propagated about Blacks' difference and underachievement in education. The book supports my experience of growing up to see my siblings being taken off one by one to 'special schools' because they were misunderstood. Reading this book helped to provide the contextual understanding of what I witnessed of my siblings' and my own failure to thrive at school; It explains the system of prejudice that prevails in education though more subtle nowadays.
It is a book written from an understanding of the black experience; history, ancestral heritage and culture in context with the social environment. It is not another book that regurgitates the perspectives and theories common to Blacks but breaks new ground and tell it as it really is.
