Customer Reviews:
Intelligent, witty, perfect.
Before buying this book I had watched Derren's TV shows and being a fan of all things psychological, enjoyed every minute of it. Thus chose to buy the book and was not disappointed. Derren is clever, witty and utterly charming. Everything inside is interesting, and even if you're not intending to try the few "magicians'" tricks included, every chapter remains captivating reading. This is possibly my favourite book, and justifiably so. Buy it. You will not regret it.
Bestg book I have ever read
His techniques on memory have, in some ways, changed my life.
I can not understand how some people can know these things
he explains, and not spend a good lot of time putting them into practice.
I would love him to write another book, maybe going into more detail
about magic, or one of the other topics he covered. I'd also like to thank him
for giving me a new armory of questions to ask my closed minded colleagues
At my closed minded catholic school.
Maybe the best purchase I ever made, Toby Thompson
Interesting insights into the mentalist's mind
I am a huge fan of Derren's TV shows. Being from Croydon too I feel a sort of bond (How sad is that!), so was delighted to get it for Christmas as asked for. The first half of the book covering Magic, Memory and Hypnotism was great fun reading, and I plan to go re-read, learn the tricks and build my own Memory Palace soon. I was also interested to find out more about NLP from his sceptical point of view.
The second half of the book covering anti-science, pseudo-science and bad thinking was harder going, especially as I've recently read Dawkins' book The God Delusion. However, Derren puts so much of himself and his beliefs into the text that it was never less than readable, and I cheered up hugely once this section got onto so-called 'psychics' and 'mediums'.
A fascinating, thought-provoking and entertaining read from an equally interesting guy although we don't find out much about him in real life.
Next time, use an editor!
There's some interesting material here but it's buried beneath sloppy, verbose writing. Gave up trying to read it properly about a third of the way through and skimmed the rest. It's about delusion.
A refreshingly honest trickster
Thoroughly enjoyed the book. Mr. Brown joins the ranks of outspoken skeptics who try to educate us on our mind errors and how they can be used against us. A healthy reading for all.
