The most deplorable day in Exmoor foxhunting was the passing of Captain Ronnie Wallace; without him there would be no Exmoor Foxhounds and, arguably, no Devon and Somerset Staghounds. He shaped the moor around him, and brought the importance of hunting home to the custodians of Exmoor; up until the 1980's landowners were encouraged to reclaim moorland; thankfully this has changed; conservation is very much the watchword. Perhaps the most important thing is that Captain Wallace died in 2002, some 3 years before the ban; to see his hounds restricted in their activities would no doubt have shattered the man; thankfully he never had to see such a thing. The sad departure of Ronnie Wallace is St. Hubert's gain, but Exmoor's loss. Here's to you Captain Wallace.
