The 100 Greatest Boxers of the century will, I'm sure, fuel debate among boxing fans the length and breadth of the country. In this book 100 of the finest fighters of the century are ranked from 1 to 100. Some of the choices are sure to spark a debate but on the whole I thought most of the fighters were worthy of their positions. The book is full of excellent pics and good, sharp little biographies on each fighter, written by boxing writer Mark Collings. There are also expert opinions from some of the top names in boxing. The likes of Angelo Dundee, Emanuel Steward and Roy Jones Jr provide their top ten greatest fighters. There is also a cracking little foreword from 'Observer' sports writer, Kevin Mitchell, and some funny and moving quotes from most of the fighters. I particularly liked the quote from the mean and sullen ex- Heavyweight champ, Sonny Liston. Sonny is quoted as saying. "Someday someone's gonna write a blues song for fighters. It's gonna have a soft trumpet a slow guitar and a bell." This book isn't a blues song but it certainly is a nice little tribute to some of the greatest fighters ever to grace the square ring.
