334 Words Of Great Beauty!
Joanne Harris describes this book as 'the best read i`ve had all year, at times very funny, genuinely touching and always deeply personal. The perfect book for anyone who has defined their life through music and the memories of their youth.'
No Joanne...its the perfect book for anyone! If you don`t laugh out loud. If you don`t feel connected to your own history, your present and your future and if you don`t cry at Ian,Heather and Edward`s loss and your own losses alongside, then you are truly a lost soul and you need help.
'Bringing It All Back Home' is the best read that anyone could have this year!
An inspiring and heartbreaking book
I always thought I was well read, but can honestly say I've never read anything like this. Ian Clayton is an author whose warmth and humour come through on almost every page. There are laugh out loud moments, bits that make you go-"oh yeah, I remember that", and bits that make you want to pick up CDs or records that you've not listened to for years.
The final chapter- "After" is the bravest piece of writing I've ever read and something that will stay with me forever.
I've now got two copies- one that stays in the house, and another that I lend to friends etc. So unless I know you- buy your own, and do it now.
A reet good journey
I feel I have to let the world know how good this book is. I devoured it like a beer junkie eats curry on a Saturday night! It got me raking through cold ashes that are memories, igniting the embers, bringing back the flame of those long forgotten faces and places. I love how he celebrates the ordinary and how he connects to that 'something inside' we all share, held together with his sincere love of all genres of music. In the words of the song "I felt he'd found my letters and read each one out loud". He made me think, he made me smile and, ultimately, he made me cry. This book warms your heart.
BRINGING IT ALL BACK HOME.
This book is a true, genuine, warm and very touching book about life. About people, characters, events, friendship, good laughs, journeys, memories and ultimately, heart breaking tragedy. All of this linked perfectly by a common thread that everyone can relate to... that of music.
After reading this gem of a book it is clear that Ian didn't get stuck behing the door when brains were given out. He has led an interesting life and had a successful career writing and broadcasting.
Regardless of this the book feels like standing at the bar with a good mate you haven't seen for ages and having a real good natter.
By the end of the book you feel that if you did drop on Ian somewhere you would end up doing just that. Thank you Ian.
Bringing it all back home strickes a chord
I was not quite sure what to expect from Ian Clayton the author as opposed to the tv presenter. For a few minutes on screen, i'd always found him engaging and interesting, but for a whole book, that's quite a different matter.
What i found was a book of great warmth, a deeply personal book that gets under your skin, sparks off memories and has a direct emotional impact.
It's an autobiographical book about Ian, a book about music, a book about infatuations, growing and changing, about northern working class life. And whilst its about all of those things, its also much more universal then that. Many of the stories in the book resonated strongly, often the
context was different but the underlying experience very similiar.
This is a brilliant book, its got me reading again, and listening to music again, and its got me thinking a lot about my upbringing, my family,my kids and what really matters.
