A Life in Pictures indeed...I gave this wonderful little book to a colleague at work who had never heard of Marcel Duchamp and he came in to work the next day full of questions and talking about Duchamp like a long-standing enthusiast. There are plenty of Duchamp books that lay claim to be a 'good introduction' to the artist - but this one actually is. Brilliantly so. The wonderful illustrations by Andre Raffray and the spare prose (translated from the french) annex the imagination... The authors, Jennifer Gough-Cooper and Jacques Caumont are world class Duchamp scholars who have made a bit of a career of gently subverting Art History... This is also a book about Modernism and its discontents - and I can't help but think that its pages would make Duchamp smile, even... 25 pages of childish delight. Absolutely.
