Customer Reviews:
A Super Flexible Reference for the ACT Practitioner
Just about everything you want to know about Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can be found in this compendium. From clinical practice to deepest theory it is all here and presented in a very accessible format. The indexing allows you to find material easily, and if you want to browse there are some real nuggets waiting to be found. It's the sort of book you can pick up, flick through and find something new every time.
"A must have resource for clinicians"
I bought this new Act text keen to get my hands on anything and everything Act related and it doesn't fail to deliver, numerous act categories both theoretical and clinical examples, clear and well presented text. The chapters are broken down into:
1: ACT: Basic and Applied
2: Comparing ACT with other Therapies and Traditions
3: Core Processes in ACT
4: ACT Foundations: RFT, Contextualism, and Behavior Analysis
5: ACT with Particular Client Groups and Clinical Problems
6: Clinical Issues and Barriers in ACT
7: ACT: The Therapeutic Process and Clinical Resources

The book contains a selection of e-mails to the ACT listserv between 2002 and 2005, a period of significant growth and development in the worldwide ACT community. The author describes how this collection started life as a personal resource but soon realized that the information was an invaluable source of guidance on ACT.

The author has achieved a great balance by including information ranging from very practical ACT resources and clinical issues to discussions regarding the theoretical, scientific and philosophical roots of ACT, discussions regarding new research findings, and emails comparing and contrasting ACT with other therapeutic approaches.

The author describes in the introduction the hope that the text does justice to the supportive nature of the ACT listserv community, where contributions from both novice and experts in ACT are respectfully received. He also alludes to the collection capturing both the dynamic and informal nature of the e-mail communications which I find lends something more intimate to this publication over other texts. This makes dipping in and out of different pages of this book feel as if you are in the privileged position of being let in on private and important conversations.

All in all I think this text offers a really practical resource for clinicans both new to and experienced in Act, as well as offering something quite different to the growing number of publications in Act. A development that I relish on both a personal and professional level.
