Editorial Reviews:
Perhaps not content with their standard anti-social activities, it seems that more and more criminals are angling for respectability by publishing their autobiographies--luridly bragging about their endeavours and romanticising their misdeeds. Certainly, there is a morbid fascination to be gained but if the recollections of Edward Bunker are anything to go by, the reality of a criminal mind truly is far stranger (and more compelling) than fiction.

Known to modern audiences as Mr. Blue in Quentin Tarantino's ultra-hip crime flick Reservoir Dogs, Bunker became the youngest ever inmate of the notorious San Quentin Prison at 17-years-old. He spent the next 18 years of his life in prison and effectively wrote his way to freedom. Mr Blue: Memoirs of a Renegade details his early life: roaming the city streets a product of a broken home, his fearsome prison experiences, his associations with the likes of Tennessee Williams and his spell as a fugitive. It culminates with the publishing of his first novel No Beast So Fierce, which Tarantino regarded as one of the finest crime novels written. There is a deep cynicism to Bunker's writing (who could blame him?) but it is overridden by a hardened optimism that you will come to respect. He expertly details the ferocity of prison life, especially his experiences at Folsom, where he witnessed savage race riots: "In a world absolutely integrated ... the cell offered no safety ... racial hatred was malevolent and intractable."Mr Blue: Memoirs of a Renegade is not a tale of a man revelling in his dubious abilities. Rather, it is a hard-as-nails narrative of someone trying to go straight in a world that won't let him but ultimately uses his writing skills as a redemptive tool to "make a lotus grow from the mud." Given the vast, violent odds he faced, miraculously it did grow in a most storming fashion. --Danny Graydon

Customer Reviews:
Outstanding no nonsense biography
Every bit as good as his novels, No Beast So Fierce, Animal Factory, Dog Eat Dog and Little Boy Blue this is a down to earth, straight talking biog by ex-con Eddie Bunker who has latterly played many bit parts in films such as Reservoir Dogs and in films of his own books, Straight Time (No Beast) and The Animal Factory. There is also the small matter that he spent over 25 years of his life locked up in some of America's toughest prisons like Folsom and San Quentin. He doesn't apologise for what he has done or whinge about what happened to him, Bunker just tells it like it was - in a tremendously readable style. Forget about the pale UK imitations - read the real thing.
Tough guys? Ed Bunkers' middle name is tough guy!
What a book! I only read books that are about real people and real life, and Mr Bunker does not disappoint! I don't know about anyone else, but everytime i picked this book up i really felt like i was with him....well a few paces behind, ready to run if needbe!
a penetrating insight into the criminal psyche
Many first-time readers of Bunker may have come across his name via his association with Quentin Tarrantino and the movie Reservoir Dogs, in which he has a minor part. Those hoping for quick thrills, superficial cleverness and gratuitous violence will be disappointed. Bunker's books are a serious and profound analysis of the brutality and despair of the criminal mind. This autobigraphy is a poignant and searing insight into Californian criminal life and Bunker's own personal struggle through the penal system. For anyone who has read his fiction, this autobiography is an absolute must-read. Eloquent, intelligent and packed full of wisdom from the university of life, I defy anyone to read this and not be moved by one man's struggle to find fulfilment and escape through writing. Bunker is no hero but one cannot help but admire this tale of human adventure, perseverance and ultimate redemption.
Stone brilliant
No Beast So Fierce (filmed as the underrated Straight Time starring a never-better Dustin Hoffman) is one of the great crime novels of the last few decades and although, like Ed Bunker's other books, it's highly autobiographical in its portrayal of a con trying to go straight in a world that won't let him, this biography does more than just fill in the gaps Bunker's novels leave. By turns chilling and exhilarating, Mr Blue is better than any other criminal's autobiography I've read - and I've read a lot. If anything lets the book down it's that it could be twice as long and you'd still want more!
