An Excellent Review of Liverpool's Historic Parks

This is an excellent and well written review of the growth, decline and subsequent partial revival of Liverpool's parks and gardens. The book charts the early beginnings, the creation of private parks and the pioneering action by the Corporation of Liverpool to create a 'ribbon of green' around the city for the general well-being of the population. This section of the book is well illustrated with a number of old postcards and maps but will leave devotees of Victorian history inevitably wanting more. There follows a rather depressing section about the sad decline of the once great parks due to war, budget restraints and the modern blight of widespread vandalism. The pressure to build on parkland is also noted. The book closes on a note of hope and stories of regeneration, new parks such as Croxteth and a renewed appreciation of the importance of this treasure to local communities. Potential buyers should be aware that this book is more than a Victorian history but is a well considered review of the past and future of Liverpool's historic parks. An excellent publication in Liverpool's Capital of Culture Year 2008.
