Customer Reviews:
Cruel, but extremely well written. Rich language.
Extremely good book, recommended to all whom enjoys a bit cruel and critical books. The Norwegian author writes with a very rich language, and makes the story very real. Afterwords you should read the following two books (The Powdertower, and The Silence). Other premium books from this author are The Sharks and Jonas.
The history of bestiality
Somewhere in this book Bjorneboe wrote: "Within 10 years my knowledge of the world will be so big that it must lead to self-destruction." Exactly 10 years later, he committed suicide. A remarkable fact that shows which atmosphere this novel breathes. It is a semi-autobiographical story about absolute freedom and absolute loneliness - two sides of one coin. About depression, about 20th century Europe and about the bestiality of mankind. Despite its pitch-black vision on humanity, it is also a very funny book. A masterpiece in irony and cynism!
A must-read book for every living being.
This book, (or theese three books, this is the first of a triology) are maybe the three best books I've ever read, but beware, do not expect to be entertained. This book is cruel, it will leave with a weird feeling inside you, and it is not for the faint hearted. Bjorneboe once wrote in an essay on Arnulf Overland that litterature that doesn't reflect that we live our lives on thin layer of ice with a big, black, meaningless and empty hole underneath is not worth reading. With this book he has produced some of most rewarding and worth-to-read litterature that I know of.
