Customer Reviews:
Shocking insight to Pakistani society
I found this book to be shocking and disturbing because like everyone else had a formed idea of what Pakistani society would be like for an author (to write about) and this was not it. Th author has cleverly managed to introduce Western traits (rejection of arranged marriages) in the book blend them with Pakistani ones and then openly discuss them. This is a book which will have an everlasting impact on the reader but its not ever one's cup of tea because it discusses issues which many people will be uncomfortable with for e.g. child abuse & adultery. Definitely one of the most powerful books I've read.
Brilliant - I can't wait for Hamid's next book
This book is brilliant. The flashback style of writing is certainly unique, and really gets one engaged. Hamid's grasp of the english language is exemplary. My only complaint is that the book was too short. But the storyline, the emotions and the characters - all excellently captured in his debut book. I think the fac that this book is semi-autobiographical also helps the reader relate to the story. An excellent read
Not Bad to Read
I read Moth Smoke about 3 months ago. I am a tube reader, so early mornings and on the way back home at about 6.15pm are the only times I really get to read. If a book is so good, sometimes I will read a chapter before going to sleep. Unfortunately Moth Smoke did not have that buzz. Saying that, it was a 3 star book which for me is a book worth reading.
A Pakistani modern day version of Macbeth
Well written , very dark book with little hope little to look forward too. Probably closer to the truth of Pakistans self pitying and hypocritical upper middle classes then the average person would reaslise.I did find it's style of narrative with the flash backs a bit tedious though
Corruption Drugs and Sex
This book paints an interesting picture of modern day life in Pakistan. It exposes all that is wrong with the middle/upper classes, the duplicity, corruption and nepotism, and the guilt that comes with it. The book is an interesting and colourful read and unfortunately reflective of modern day Pakistan.
