Editorial Reviews:
The Eye of the World and its sequels in Robert Jordan's Wheel of Time series show the extent to which one can go with a traditional fantasy framework, with added gusto. Stock elements are abound: a reluctant hero--in fact five humble village folk--plucked from wholesome obscurity to fight dark powers; an eternal evil enemy who can be defeated but not destroyed, until the end of the world, which is fast approaching; a mysterious sisterhood with vast powers and who love to manipulate thrones and kingdoms from the shadows (think of the Bene Gesserit of the Dune series); a ferocious battle-hardened warrior race (echoes of the Fremen of Dune, or the Haruchai of the Thomas Covenant novels).

Jordan didn't become a bestselling author merely by mixing up traditional ingredients; a master storyteller, he ingeniously gives unusual twists to these conventional fantasy elements. He also excels in the descriptive and narrative skills needed to create a detailed and coherent imaginary world. The many lands he portrays are vast in scope and contain amazingly varied countries and peoples, while retaining the inner coherence needed to make them satisfying places for a fantasy fan to roam around in. However, Jordan's writing never attains the subtlety or sophistication of, say, George RR Martin and there are some annoying stylistic tics: he seems unable to introduce a female character without commenting on her neckline and thereafter has them forever smoothing their dresses.

To his publisher's credit, Jordan's books are fortunate among fantasy novels in not having covers that look like an explosion of a teenager's bedroom. The absence of such lurid artwork is, perhaps, part of their appeal. --David Pickering

Customer Reviews:
Sprinter girl
I thought that this book was great! It took some time to get into, but once I'd passed the first chapter I was completely ingrossed and took this book everywhere with me till i finished it...I thought the characters were interesting and the story, though the ending was predictable, was well written and left me craving for more :)
amazing!
this is a brilliant book if you enjoy fantasy! Has depth that rivals series such as "A song of ice and fire"! I really really recomend it! I'm hooked!
Fantasy by numbers, but good.
As with most reviews, its perhaps better to start with the negatives so that you can finish with the positives, so that's what I'll do here. The two main critisisms I have with this book, is that it borrows a great deal from Lord of the Rings and several other novels of the same genre. Secondly the plot and the characters are not the most original you will ever come across, for instance all the female characters seem to be of extremely independent, fierce, righteous, intelligent and mysterious, the same can be said of the main male characters as well, although to a lesser extent.

Those problems aside I can say that this is one of the most enjoyable books I have read in recent times, I was highly scepticle of this series before picking up a copy of the first installment, but after reading the first few chapters all dubious feelings were washed away. Whilst this is not what I would call a particularly profound or philosophical piece of writing, it is both exciting and entertaining, I found it hard to put down and read the entire thing in a week, whilst considering the length of the book and the small amount of free time I get it has to be a very decent book to get me to do that.

I would reccomend this to anyone who likes the adventure/fantasy genre, its not perfect, neither is it the best in the series (they get far better, but it is a neccesary starting point if you wish to get into the rest of the books. All the elements required for a decent fantasy epic are here (borrowed or otherwise) and are used to great effect to create an enjoyable story. However I would stress that if you would rather read something particularly profound and meaningful of a similar genre then I would recommend you steer clear and read something by Iain M Banks instead, but if its an exciting and absorbing page turner you are after, then look no further.
Robert Jordan R.I P
First of all a special mention for the great man, who has written this amazing series, many thanks Robert Jordan.

The Eye of the World is the first installment of the Wheel of Time series and is the start of a Fantasy adventure right up there with the best of them. The story is very complex but well worth your time and you will find yourself so involved that chapters literally fly by.

The story evolves around three young lads, Rand Mat and Perrin, who are taken away from their village and have to take centre stage to fight against evil which comes from all around them.

Don't be put off by the size of this book or indeed the size of the series as its a magical story and has given me personally hours of fun.

Enjoy!
A FANTASY DOCTOR REVIEW
I have two reasons for writing this review.

1)This is one of my favorite all time fantasy epics, I know a lot of people say his books went down hill after book nine.
I also beleive this, but I still enjoyed his work. For those of you who dont know, Robert Jordan was fighting a particularly brutal blood desease while writing books ten and eleven.
Alas he lost his fight(16/09/2007) while half way through finishing book twelve.
2)The second and main reason for writing this review is that Tor Publishing has signed on another author to finish book twelve.
The authors name is Brandon Sanderson author of the stand alone novel Elantris and also the Mistborn Trilogy of which two have already been published

I hope Mr Sanderson will do this masterpeice justice.

P.S, Jordan's/Sanderson's book twelve, A Memory of Light is scheduled for publication in autumn 2009.

I hope this review was of some help to you.
