Not everything is covered of G6 ABRSM Theory
The book doesn't cover everything needed to know to pass the Grade 6 ABRSM Theory. My teacher, and other theory books, brought up things that i didn't know anything about - and I've been religiously studing G6 as my intention is to get to G8 & then pass the diploma. After i couldn't find things my teacher looked and he couldn't find them either. I don't usually criticize books like this but G1-5 covered everything - i got a distinction for G5 (which i'm really proud of - as you can see). So how do the ABRSM expect you to get good grades if they don't cover everything you need to know ? Peter Aston & Julian Webb, the authors, haven't done a good job in writing this book - it doesn't live up to the standard of Eric Taylor's G1-5 books.

Not as good as the other Music Theory books.

I don't like to be negative but i didn't really find this book good or that helpfull. My Teacher asked me if i would leave it at her house so she could have a look at it - she wasn't impressed either. Perhaps its because it has a new author? So far from 1-5 it has been Eric Taylor, the grade 6 book is by Peter Aston & Julian Webb. It only slightly touches on figured bass and doesn't go into alot of detail about the rules and techniques etc.. even though it is a fundamental part of the exam paper. It doesn't go into detail about binary form which if you used with the composition you have to do - It would get you alot of marks as you have to know about this for G6. I'm lucky i have an excellent teacher but the people who rely on books like this, like i did in the past, would not be covering every thing they need to know. I've bought 2 other books which you can both buy on Amazon. 'HARMONY IN PRACTICE' Anna Butterworth & 'THEORY WORKBOOK Grade 6 ' these would help you alot, I've found them incredibly useful.

Depth and Beauty beyond Grade 5
For all those who have done Grade 5 theory and enjoyed it, this is a great way to discover something beyond. The material is certainly more advanced - and so more fulfilling. If you want to set out on the journey to a new level, and enjoy the richness and depth behind great music, this is a good way to go. And of course essential for those who plan to sit the exam.
