I cannot describe how much I loved this book. This is a profoundly moving and vivid account of the author's experiences directing musical projects in post-war Bosnia. I laughed and cried my way throughout the book as the individuals she meets come hilariously and tragically to life. Ruth Waterman is not only a distinguished violinist but also a writer of enormous skill with an ability to capture the subtlest nuances of the personalities and situations she encounters. She writes with great insight and humanity and her often searingly honest accounts of her own reactions serve to illuminate this complex tangle of human experience. This is also some of the best writing I have read about the life of a professional musician. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is curious about what the life of a professional musician is really about from the moments of deeply unglamorous compromises to the richest rewards of spiritual illumination. An unmissable book - I can't wait to re-read it!
