I received Peter Alliss' new book as a Christmas present and greatly enjoyed reading it over the holiday period. It is presented as a series of short biographies on each player with lots of personal views and opinions from Peter Alliss. Some players get a more in depth treatment than others but this tends to match how near the top of the hero league they appear. For example Bobby Jones and Jack Nicklaus get more pages than, say Johnny Miller or Nick Price. The book contains lots of nice photos, many of which I'd not seen before. My favourite is Walter Hagen and Bobby Jones shaking hands at the 1929 British Open. Highlights of the book are Peter Alliss' own experiences of meeting the players, for example he caddied for Bobby Jones as a youngster when the great man visited England. Some of his opinions of the players are a bit hard and I think he's given some of them a bit of a hard time, e.g. Tony Jacklin. He also doesn't cover the players prior to the likes of Bobby Jones or Walter Hagen so if you're looking for information about James Braid or Harry Vardon you'll need to go elsewhere. My main feeling when I finished the book was that there wasn't enough information about many of the players. I wanted to find out more. Not a real criticism though as the book is a good introduction to most of the great players and I really enjoyed receiving it as a Christman present.
