Customer Reviews:
Great New Find
We are all waiting for the next Tolkein to appear - this is still not it! However, neither are the Gemmells, Brooks, Pratchetts, Andersons etc etc, and this new book from a new author certainly has the potential to be rated amongst the king's accolytes if not alongside the king himself.

The writing is crisp and direct- why use a paragraph to describe a situation when a few well chosen words will do just as well. Master Black does not feel the need to 'pad out' a story by including long descriptive passages, but instead concentrates on developing a very fresh and exciting story which has so much potential for further tales. Not only can we look forward to following the current tale over the next few books, but there is so much potential to discover the history of all the incidental characters - what is the background to the comradeship of Brachas and Rithar, the full story behind the friendship of Dravish's father and Carth, the tales behind the Traumean, and above all, the coming of the 'False Gods'.

Due to the snappy style of writing, this book is a good introduction to the Fantasy idiom, whether for a young reader or just anyone who wants to hear a good story but who doesn't have the patience (or time) to wade through the plethora of descriptive prose which often accompanies these novels, and which often put off the reader before they have a chance to 'get into' the book. Master Black wants to tell us a story, not show off his knowledge of thesauri.

This reviewer is certainly looking forward to the next installment.
The beginning of something great!
False Gods is an engrossing read that avoids the pretension of certain other fantasy authors. The writing is sharp and fast paced yet still manages to prod your imagination into clear visualisation.
The characters are multi-dimensional and feel 'real' drawing you deeply into the story which flows smoothly, while still managing to excite your curiosity with occasional plot twists.
All in all, this is one of those 'couldn't put it down until I was finished' books that has you up past your bedtime! (ask my husband if you don't believe me!)
I was left in eager anticipation of the next instalment and would recommend this book to any fan of fantasy fiction.
