Yawn....

I have to agree, the car reviews in the book are meaningless, unresearched claptrap. The book reads as if it was written in an afternoon over a pint and it's not funny unless your 12. It's more about taking the piss out of people. Cheap shots and cynical.

Don't bother!!!

Absolute garbage, wouldn't waste money on a book that the author seems to know sod all about!!!

A very funny book

I bought this for my dad and thought it was hilarious. Some of the photos, which look like the original ads from the last 40 years, are brilliantly macho - lots of average-looking men with beautiful women draped over their cars on the beach, on a private landing strip,in the middle of a field(why?!). I particularly liked the man parked at a stables in riding gear putting a saddle into his carboot - can he fit the horse in there too? I thought it was a funny, nostalgic trip for the generation who aspired to own these cars when it was cool to wear brown and orange together or who fancied themselves as an all action stud and wanted to drive a bond-girl magnet, but had a family of four to fit on the back seat. Ha ha ha!

Top Gear: Midlife Crisis Cars
|
I thoroughly enjoyed this highly amusing look back at some of the iconic 'midlife crisis' cars. It isn't intended to be a dull tech-heavy look at engine sizes; it's about nostalgia and a reminder of some key cars from our motoring past, plus humorous psychology regarding the British midlife crisis - something we all hope to avoid, but will no doubt plunge headlong into without a hint of irony. It includes some wonderful pictures too.
I found it to be an excellent little book to give to all those cord and hush puppy-wearing Fathers, Uncles and brothers who've bought, owned or dreamed of driving a Lambourghini or Ferrari. Part of me recoils with horror, but another part thinks 'yes, one day.....' Get saving chaps!

Wry, witty look at dream cars
|
I was given this on my 40th birthday (surprise surprise!) and I found myself not only laughing out loud right the way through it, but also unable to put it down. Luckily it's short, so I wasn't trapped for too long! It's sharp, witty and also incredibly informative for such a short book. The author really knows his stuff, as you'd expect with Top Gear. He packs in some great detail on each car and the accompanying photographs, particularly the older ones, are priceless. Yes - he's quite rude about some cars, but to be bland is a far bigger crime in my opinion. This is a real gem!
