Not as good as I'd hoped
|
I was looking forward to this book; but despite being quite entertaining and informative overall, I found it a little disappointing.
There were some worrying bloopers in the research - for example Carbon Dioxide is confused with Carbon Monoxide throughout; which left me unsure how much to trust the rest of it.
Also, Mr Oliver isn't quite as funny as he thinks he is, and his attempts to inject humour into the text fall rather flat.

Entertainingly Informative

This is the 3rd Harry Oliver book I have had the pleasure of reading and would definitely recommend it. Full of interesting and informative entries and an ideal Christmas present to liven up the post-turkey lethargy!

Flaptastic!

Last christmas I received Harry Oliver's two other books (March Hares and Monkey's Uncles, on the origins of words and phrases, and Black Cats and April Fools, on supersitions) and thoroughly enjoyed dipping in and out of both of them I purchased a copy of Cat Flaps, and it's just great. Harry condenses the history of inventions into funny and short entries - perfect toilet reading. If you're stuck for a gift, you can't really go wrong with this little gem! Looking forward to whatever Harry turns his attentions to if he pens another one.
