Customer Reviews:
The best book I have seen for bike repair or maintenance
This book ideal for beginners to bicycle repair and maintenance. There are lots of photographs in the book which make things easier to understand. I find it to be a useful reference book when I need to review different aspects of bicycle maintenance or repair.
Pretty good. Worth adding to the book shelf
The pictures are large in colour and accurate (nice close-ups). There are decent technical cutaways diagrams when required. The details cover the aspects of common modern bikes. This includes things like elastomer forks as well as newer oil forks and air (although it is a bit vague on air forks). I found the sections on derailleur adjustments and wheel bearing replacements to be very good, as these are the things I do on a regular basis. I also have "zinn and the art of mountain bike maintenance" which seems to get a lot of 5* reviews, but in my honest opinion, this book is better as it covers a smaller more popular range of components (maybe more UK specific?) The text is also more precise and the diagrams clearer. If you are concerned I would check them out first in a bookshop as they are two totally different books, but if you do decide buy this I don't think you'll be disappointed. It’s quite a good price too!
A Useful Book
This is a useful book that tries to make bicycle maintenance easy. Nicely coloured diagrams and very useful checklists, together with an indication of the difficulty of the task helps the reader. I found that not all the terms were explained when they were first used. This meant reading on, aware that you didn't know what exactly was being discussed, until the term became clear later. This was a really strange feeling, and reduced the effectiveness of the book for me. That aside, there is still some value in the suggested routines and the tables indicating the tools and skill required in order to carry out a certain task.
Good place to start
Before buying this book I only had a very basic knowledge, and found this book very helpful.
Since buying it, I have fitted a new Rear Mech, and adjusted both front and rear gears so they now run very smoothly, fitted and learned to adjust V-brakes. Learned how to properly wash & lubriacate my bike and the importance of doing it, and am soon about to tackle installing a new Bottom bracket, front crankset, front mech, new gear shifters and chain.
This book explained procedures very clearly, with helpful colour diagrams for each step. I would say though that the book is aimed at beginners, and once you get to to a more experinced level you would probably require a more technical book that explains things in greater details.
But if like me, you want to get into doing your own maintenance, repairs and upgrades this is as good a place to start as any
Comprehensive and useful book
As a newcomer to bikes in general, I think this is a really good book. It covers all of the things I wanted to know in more detail than any of the other books I have bought. Those who thought it was poorly thought out must be mad.
