Not the best by martina.............

Having just finished this book after anchoring for it for ages - I have to say Im quite disappointed and definitely wasnt her best! This book had no laugh out loud moments as her usual novels do, and seemed to be a bit morbid and written quite strangely for my liking! I definitely prefer martinas newer material my fave been "all i want is you" but to be fair I have liked all of her books - Martina has definitely got better with time!

A GREAT STORY

Don't let the book title or the cover put you off, the title and cover do not reflect the story at all - The Onion Girl is just a part in a play which one of the characters is playing. The story is typically chick-lit with cheating, girly banter and also has two serious overtones - gambling addiction and extreme shyness leading to depression and suicide. The story flows well, we feel sympathy for both lead characters at various points of their lives and we also love them both. All in all, it is a well written story and well worth reading - a lovely Irish story.

An exceptional novel!

Having read Tina Reilly's wonderful 'Flipside', I immediately went out and bought 'the Onion Girl'. It's a fantastic story that keeps you enthralled from start to finish. Tina Reilly knows her charachters and as with 'Flipside' one feels as if the author has transported you right into the centre of their world. Unforgettable...

I bought this book for my holidays as I liked the cover. (Very shallow, I know) However, it has been one of the best books I have read. The characters are vibrant and seem to walk off the page. While it is a dark book, there is plenty of humour to balance the plot. The story centres around two misfits - Jack, a school teacher with a gambling problem, and nervous, self-conscious Meg. They knew one another as kids and then Jack moved away and never wrote to Meg. The story picks up ten years later and we see how their lives have changed and what made them become the people they are. The book had depth and a lot of bite and I would definately recommed it to anyone wanting a different type of read to the fluffy romances out there.

Meg and Jack are definitly some of the best drawn characters I have come across. The whole plot is just gripping, never predicable like so many books written for the female market. Tina Reilly brings the charaters and their situations alive. I found I could really empathise with both Meg and Jack. Meg is so weak, usually I hate weak charaters, but not in this book! Thankfully Jack is not the big strong man that usually features in so many books. Both were so real, and I really wanted to know what would happen next. I could never predict where the story would lead, but it all flowed so naturally. The ending...well it was a relief! I don't think my heart could have taken much more tension. I hate to give away too much of the plot it would ruin it. Definitly this is the best book Tina Reilly has written yet. Buy it NOW!!! You can't be dissapointed.
