Customer Reviews:
Fisherman's son destiny
Asher is a fisherman's son, the youngest of seven brothers who doesn't have anything but whatever left from their brothers, which is virtually nothing. He runs away from his home hoping to earn some money in the city to come back one year later and buy a boat for his dad and himself. There is indeed a lot of money waiting for him along with a big adventure, big power and the destiny of the whole country in his hands.
It is enjoyable read, make you turn the pages. The reason of cutting 1 star is because the story is a little too slow and much less magic happening than I expect to see in this first book. Lets hope it get better for the second one.
a good read but only if your in for the long run
I love the book, its a deceptive beginning in terms of how complex this story could turn out to be. However, as you read of you get to know the characters a lot more and the reading gets easier.

Ms Miller keeps you on your toes on how she changes the point of view of the character occasionally, making you have to read over the last paragraph again.

The reason I say it is long is because I found the story dragged on in the end because I was so looking forward to the ending, then I find out that I need the next book.

However considering that I still say that this is a very good book, worth reading if you in for the long run and reading both of the books
Very good and easy read
I bought the Innocent Mage and the Awakened Mage, and finished both in two days!!! If you buy the first i would really recommend buying the second straight away, because it ends on such a cliffhanger that you can't help but pick up the next one right after...

Don't be fooled by the complicated reviews and descritptions on here, it is a really easy world to get a grip on, not complicated at all. New developments are welcomed and further develop the plot, rather than add to a growing confusion as other fantasies are wont to do. If you are already a fan on fantasy books, this series is a must-have read.

I am giving it 4 stars because it wasn't perfect (but still highly enjoyable). It was written well, easy to follow, and some of the characters are really well developed. My only issue is the lead character is so stubborn and rude sometimes that you want to hit him, and also in the middle of the second book some characters appear to have a personality transplant...but only a few mind, and i understand why the author has done so.

If you enjoyed the likes of the trudy canavan magician series, then this is definitely a book for you.
You have to buy both books!
If you buy Innocent Mage you have to buy Awakend Mage at the same time. Why? because Innocent ends on such a cliff hanger it had me stomping round the house wanting to read the rest of the story!

Both books are a nice easy read. The story is fairly predictable (except at the end of the first book!) which means you can enjoy the books as you are reading them instead of skim reading them to find out what happens.
Excellent story!
This is a little bit different to the usual fantasy stuff, but in a good way. I loved the interaction between Asher and Gar and to some extent Darran. As far as the main characters are concerned it's just everyday life. Through most of the book they don't know that a huge threat is coming and that Asher is the key. Refreshing!
I really enjoyed this and ordered the conclusion straight away. I thought this was as well written as the Joe Abercrombie (The First Law) books I have just read.
