Editorial Reviews:
John Ross, the tortured, conflicted A Knight of the Word from Terry Brooks's Running with the Demon, finally gets a good night's sleep in the sequel. He buys this moment's peace at the cost of his sacred oath to be a champion of the Word, renouncing that pledge after failing to prevent the slaughter of a group of schoolchildren. Duty and destiny are difficult to elude, though, and soon his former charge Nest Freemark, now a college student and Olympic hopeful, arrives to warn him of his imminent destruction or, worse still, his unwitting fall into the service of the Void.

The story winds lazily through sleepy, wet Seattle like a tour bus, steadily building. Everything eventually converges on the homeless shelter where John works with his new sweetheart Stefanie Winslow for über-activist Simon Lawrence, a man his dreams tell him he is fated to kill. A thin mystery clouds the identity of the demon conspiring to deliver John unto evil, but the book's real focus is John's fitful, foot- dragging attempt to fulfil his destiny. Knight of the Word doesn't provide the suspenseful energy of Running, a book that followed Nest through the dramatic loss of her childhood, but it rejoins her as she assumes the responsibilities of young adulthood and--like that period in life--still manages to deliver satisfying, if more subtle, rewards. --Paul Hughes

Customer Reviews:
The Beginning Of The Word/Void Trilogy
This is a really good book, though I won't give it 5 stars. Terry's ideas are always intriguing for me, and the ones I've found in RUNNING WITH THE DEMON are no exceptions.

Nest Freemark is in many ways a complex character, equally so is her grandmother--keep an eye on this one. I believe that anyone who has read the novels that Terry has written to date will agree to that Word/Void is his most original piece yet. The secret lies with his characters.

Anyway, I'm going to buy it. I really like this series. It's a cross between Fantasy/Sci-Fi but you can describe it as the first.

A book that failed to intice the reader
The premise of the book surrounds the charater of a young girl called 'nest' with untold magical powers with the ability to see beings and creatures her friends cannot, protecting a park thats close by, as her mother did and every female generation of her family has done, with all this seeming destined to come to a head when John Ross appears.

This book has the typical theme of good verus evil - John Ross(the good) and unsurprisingly the Demon (the bad). Though the unexpected part is that the author fails to deliver characters that can keep the interest of the reader, John Ross and the Demon fail to bring forth different parts of their chracters with both seemingly unchanging throughout the novel. Though not all is bad for the reader, the author thankfully brings a plot that can keep the audience rapt with anticipation as to what the resumption of the novel will bring, charting the learning curve of 'nest' and her conflicts with not only that of the magical realm, but that of her turmoil at home and with her friends.

I've read many of this authors books mainly the 'shannara series' of which his first attempt -'The Sword of Shannara' remains his best, and I can't help but wonder whether the characters created in 'Running with the Demon' more suited the realm that the author knows best - 'shannara'.

This is a book that could only be given as suggested reading to those real die-hard fans, who wait with baited breath for the release for everyone of this authors books, for those who like not only entertaining characters and twisting plots, but would still like to read a book by this author I suggest 'The Sword of Shannara', otherwise you can always read this book yourself and see what you think!

tragic
Brooks seems to have abandoned his original style of fantasy and come up with a story which simply does'nt work. Fantasy in the real world some how seems silly and over the top. He's taken too long in adding any action or excitement. The only saving grace this story has is it's final battle with the Maetrog. Brooks needs to stick to what he's good at.
If you like 'real-life' fantasy...
RWTD has characters you care about and a plot you'll want to see out to the end. Funny thing is some of the ideas the author comes up with regarding the way the worrld really works, sound quite reasonable! Well worth a read.
A brilliant and intriguing plot full of mystery and suspense
A personal favourite I absolutely adore this book. In my opinion it's Terry Brook's best book yet.
