Fills in the history and enjoyable at the same time
|
Covering the history prior to the first Halo game this book is easy to read and begins by chronicling the creation of the Spartan program and the participant's subsequent training and first missions up to the first appearance of the Covenant. It can be a bit slow during these sections but it then picks up and expands on both the fall of Reach and the supposed destruction of all the other Spartans and how the Pillar of Autumn came to crash on Halo.
OK, so it isn't high art or ever going to be listed next to Shakespeare, etc., but for a novel based on a video game it is enjoyable and will be so even more to anyone who has played the games. The character of Keyes is expanded upon and there is a plausible explanation of why the Pillar could survive the impact it suffered on Halo and it is this and other fine detail not evident in the games that add to the enjoyment of the whole Halo storyline.
Extended universe has worked for Star Wars and in this instance it has also worked here.

It's awsome but under developed!

I read the book because it has Halo on the cover. After completing all three Halo's I wanted to learn more so I went to a bookstore and found this and three other books, it was awesome and I wished it were longer but it went quickly between John and Lieutenant Keyes. I am glad they made the book.
" Kudos to you!"

A very good read!

When I first read Halo: First Strike I thought "It was good but could have had more action." I don't want to give to much away to anyone who has not read it yet so I will sum it up short and sweet.
"A good read, worth the money, but could have had more action"
That is to say that the ending was very good. A very good read!

The Master Chief Is Born

Books based on games are always a gamble, but with the rich plot of the Halo games and the efforts Bungie have made to create a detailed universe I decided to give the books a chance. I have to admit that I am surprised by the quality.
The Fall of Reach covers the events leading up to the first Halo game. It details the creation of the SPARTAN-II soldiers, the Master Chief's background, the beginnings of the Human-Covenant war, and also backstory on some of the periphery characters in the game, such as Captain Keyes.
The book moves at a rapid pace so covers a lot of ground. Nylund's style is a little too excitable and he could maybe flesh his characters out a little more, but he writes action well and considering the subject matter it is a well thought out novel.
Frankly, it could all be very silly but what you end up with is a gritty and mostly credible tale set within the Halo universe. If you have enjoyed the Halo games, give The Fall of Reach and the other books in the series a go.

The book that got me hooked.
|
In June 2006 I finished reading my first book "The Good Guys Wear Black". Like average books, it started off interesting, then became abit dull in the middle and ending up with a good finale. I got a great buzz because this was the first book I had actaully read through to the end. So I decided to get another book. One a bit more interesting. I went into boarders and looked around. I'm a great fan of Science-Fiction so I thought I'd look in the SF section. I found a book called "Halo: The Fall of Reach" (which I thought was pronounced as 'Ree-Ack'). I knew the game existed but I never played it and I didnt know anything about it. So I bought it.
The month was August when I started reading it and MAN WAS IT AMAZING! I never knew a book could captivate me with such a grip. After reading the first three books, I had to play the game. But I didnt have an X-Box. Luckily my mate bought one and he even got Halo. During the game I'd say what was going to happen next in a scene. I also realised that a Longsword Interceptor was pronounced as a 'Long...Sword', not a 'Longs... Word'. Also what I failed to realise in the book was that Sgt Johnson was balck, not white and that Cortana was purple, not blue. I never would have known these things if it were'nt for the game.
SInce then I have read all four Halo novels, the Halo Graphic novel and I have played the first two games. I am one of the biggest Halo fans alive. I am planning on buying the Halo comics, The fifth Halo novel coming out in october and hopefully will get to play the third game. I am one of the biggest fans and it hasn't even been a year since I read the first word, on the first page of the first book.
I higly recommend The Fall of Reach to anyone because it is, all in the all, the best Science Fiction novel I have ever read. This is truely the book that got me hooked.
God save the creaters of Halo...(the universe, not the ring).
