Customer Reviews:
The Portable Door
I bought this book knowing nothing of Tom Holt's writing or even the genre of the book I had bought - this perhaps increased my enjoyment of the book when I worked it out.
The book started off as a rather odd story of a young man in a very slightly strange new job - I wondered how on earth a portable door was going to come into the story. It was well worth carrying on with - laughs aplenty - and a new way of looking at the world around us. I can thoroughly recommend this book and the two follow-ups "In Your Dreams" and "Earth, Air, Fire and Custard"
An easy read
The Portable Door is an amusing and undemanding read. It might not have you rolling on the floor, sides splitting with laughter; however, I can guarantee you'll find yourself chuckling.

Not his greatest book, if you've ever read Tom Holt's earlier books - Djinn Rummy, Snow White & the Seven Samurai, etc. - you'll be disappointed. And you'll be even more disappointed if you go on to read the third book in this series, Earth, Air, Fire & Custard; quite simply, it's drawn out, long and about as gripping as a pair of silk boxers.

In Your Dreams, however, is a vast improvement on the first book; think of The Portable Door as an introduction to the characters, and In Your Dreams as an interesting story in their life. I'm hoping that the fourth book will regain some of the charm and humour I found in In Your Dreams.
Being Harry Potter
This is my first Tom Holt book. Holt's writing style is very similar to other humourous British writers such as Robert Rankin and Douglas Adams, although on this evidence he can't quite match those authors skill in the genre. The "Portable Door" comes across like a cross between Harry Potter and "Being John Malkovich", to the point that I don't think this book would have existed without Charlie Kaufmans genius script of the latter. That said, it was a breeze to read and an enjoyable slice of silly slapstick.
The Portable Door
Enjoyable good book that is easy to read. Plot can be a little obvious but the book travels along at a good pace. Good example of Tom Holt's work. Characters are sketches but anyone familiar with a fantasy book will pick up quickly. Definately comedy rather than a fantasy/SF book.
Hilarious
I laughed till i couldn't breath.You simply can't put this book down!
