In Black and White
|
A very interesting book.
There are always two sides to an argument, but you do have to question the rugby board who seem to come across as being totally incompetent. With all the political wranglings going on, you do wonder what Jake's role sometimes was, with all the political interference going on.
The Luke Watson selection is covered in great detail, something that would only happen in SA rugby.
Whilst Jake does write a little about the relationships with the players, it would have been beneficial if this was covered in more detail.

The ego has landed
|
|
Jake White is a very, very good rugby coach - his record speaks for itself. Jake White is also a tosser - if this book is anything to go by. His ego, his constant sense of entitlement and persecution issues, etc., etc. Not enjoyable.

Rugby fan's dream
|
Read this in SA over christmas hols.
Coaching the Boks transformed Jake from a school teacher into a national icon. Great to get the story of how much sweat and tears he had to put in and how far he had to draw on reserves to get across the line.
Not the best writing and some small factual inaccuracies but at the end of the day, any Bok fan will enjoy this more than many current bestsellers. (Jake outselling Harry Potter in SA at the moment!!)

The road to success...
|
"In Black and White" is the fascinating autobiography of one of South Africa's greatest rugby coaches, who helped transform the Springboks into the world's number one rugby team and uniting South Africa into a winning nation. It chronicles his life from childhood to his early career years, unto the arduous road to world-cup triumph. Along the way he describes his personal sacrifice for the game, constant bickering with political administrators, to adversity from the media and his contemporaries. He provides great insight to the behind-the-scenes workings of the team and character of the players.
Although it's an autobiography, I constantly got the impression that the whole truth is not given, as it only focuses on White's point of view. It also gives little insight to the holistic functioning of SA Rugby and technical aspects of the game.
Overall it's very inspirational and a good read which will delight many rugby fans, especially Springbok supporters. Recommended.

Couldn't put it down
|
This is a fantastic insight into South African rugby & Jakes fight to reserect the Springboks & win the rugby world cup.
It will astound you to read of the difficulties that Jake had to endure to bring Springbok rugby back from the doldrums.
I couldn't put the book down from reading the first page.
It's a shame that he had to go after the world cup & i certainly believe he will achieve many more great things - just a shame that SA rugby doesn't want him.
