Get by in a really foreign land

You will not learn chinese with this book & CD. Forget it. But I think it is still excellent value, and it will set you up to be able to "get by" in China. Not only do you get the Traveltalk CD with some useful phrases (and of course alternative answers); you also get the superb Lonely Planet Mandarin phrasebook. This has English on one side, and both pinyin spelling and simplified characters on the Chinese side. If all else fails, you can always point to the appropriate phrase. Your new found friend / doctor / taxi driver can check for the chinese answer and point to that. You can then communicate: all be it slowly and in a limited way. Otherwise, believe me, you'll be totally stuck!
