Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive!
Does what it says on the cover - comprehensive rules for that thorny problem of working out the gender of thousands of French words.

Some of these rules are obvious and simple, eg every French word ending in MENT that you are likely to use (unless you like female horses!) is masculine. All very well, except that there are 37 different rules to learn and in most case there is nothing obvious about the rule either. There still really is no 'real' reason why your arm is masculine and your leg is feminine except that bras ends in 's' and jambe ends in 'mbe'

So you may find that it's just as easy to get to know whether words are masculine or feminine - and anyway I find that the French are very forgiving about my many, many mistakes.

If you love French then buy the book - some of the rules might stick - either way its an impressive achievement for the author just working them all out after long years of research!
