True lovers seperated - but love not destroyed
|
This book is not the famous poem by H W Longfellow but a novel based on that poem. The novel describes the simple village life of "Acadians" French, Roman Catholic, settlers in Novs Scotia. The Acadians did not refuse to show allegience to the King of England - but they did refuse to fight against the French - their follow countrymen - with whom Britain was at war. The story tells of the romance of Evangeline and Gabriel who were to be married. On the eve of their marriage British soldiers evicted them from the hard-worked land and burned their village. The Acadians were transported to the southern States of the U.S. At this point the young lovers were seperated. The story relates how, over many years, Evangeline gave herself to finding here once husband-to-be. The story is a moving account of tender and powerful love.
