Political page turner
|
An unusual and inspiring tale, this short, well written book tells the story of Wendell Wilkie, the unlikely businessman who became the Republican Presidential candidate to challenge Franklin Roosevelt in the 1940 US elections. Written from an American perspective (and why not?), this books charts the significance of this event and the vital impact upon Britain's survival during the early years if WWII.
And it is a page turner; dealing first with Wilkie's origins and influences, it records the daily action at both the Democrat and Republican Conventions with pace and passion (the author was a direct observer to these events as a young man). The book succeeds by bringing the subject and the times to vivid life. Well recommended.
