Editorial Reviews:
"Relationships in New York are about detachment. But how do you get attached when you want to?"

Candace Bushnell, in the divinely bitchy Sex and the City, answers this question by introducing a formidable corps of successful grown-ups who are each "up to their cuffs in polished cynicism". Fully equipped with high credit limits, high heels and a never-ending supply of condoms, they storm their way through the stars and bars of New York doing drugs, drink and sex and treading the dangerous waters between the easy-living twentysomething years and the last-chance thirtysomethings.

As successful and smart single women work their way through Married Men and Modelisers (men who will only date models), Serial Daters and Perennial Bachelors, watching forlornly as the occasional Happily Married pops in to remind themselves how lucky they are, Bushnell irreverently dives in and out of varying habitats, eavesdropping on shabby lives decorated with Gold Cards and Designer Labels and taking the reader on an anthropological tour of the underbelly of the rich and the richer on their endless search for fulfilment.

Painfully sharp, often poignant and chock full with more truth than anyone would really like to admit, Sex and the City is a harem-scarem, casually vicious but ultimately thorough dissing of a thirtysomething world where gloss and glamour can never compensate for The Real Thing, and where eventually Settling is the only answer. --Susan Harrison

Customer Reviews:
Pointless
I must confess to never watching the TV show but being aware of the hype I was expecting this book to be witty, sassy and a lot of fun. I was disappointed on every level. The characterisations were very poor and I ended up not caring about any of them. There was no plot so nothing to drive you on to turn the page and most of the humour was unsubtle and unfunny. A waste of time and a really bad advert for the TV classic.
Not worth the money
I read the reviews on amazon before buying this book, but thought it couldn't possibly be that bad, believe me it IS! It was awful, stick to the tv series
best read when you're on the loo.
This is an interesting book. The style of writing however was not to my taste as it is based in little chunks that can't really be read in big sittings. Hence my title, I'm not being rude, but this is to be read a page or two at a time while you do what you've gotta do.

The characters are strong & well displayed & although I had problems with the plot not everyone will. My main problem was probibly that I'm a fan of the TV show. The style is very differnet & obviously well crafted, just don't expect to be swept off your feet.

The Other Side of the Coin
I bought a magazine two years ago and got 4 Blondes free. I knew then Candace Bushnell and I were not on the some page. Whereas "Sex and the City" the TV show makes me want to leave my boyfriend/job/wardrobe and run away to the glamorous life of the Big Apple; "Sex and the City" the book makes me damn glad to have a man with a big "unmentionable" and warm feet, and a real life. Miranda has always been my favourite in the show because I can recognise her and her values; noone in this book is recognisable. It is a cynical, depressing hodge podge of tales about attraction, rejection, and ultimately lonlieness; or worse: settling. Apart from a more than slightly bitter taste in my mouth, I am left with a massive admiration for whomever saw the potential in this work which gave birth to the most stylish, provocative, groundbreaking and to hell with it: fun TV programme of our time. Currently in Ireland we are 3 episodes from the end- I would wear black but I have learned far too much over the years!!
I "heart" NY
what an unpleasant "surprise"!
Since I am a fan of the TV series, I treated myself to this book .....What a mistake !! The screenwriter is to be congratulated in making a silk purse from a sow's ear...the book is noticeably lacking in the wit and charm that pervades the series..Just a set of boring monologues ......
