A good introduction to ancient greek
|
|
The basics are introduced in this book (Present, future, aorist, imperfect, perfect and pluperfect indicative verbs; definite articles; 1st 2nd and 3rd declension nouns; basic sentence construction) - but then contains just exercises, with the grammar in "Abbott & Mansfield's Primer of Greek Grammar". These exercises are a series of sentences (both english > greek, and greek > english), as well as longer prose sections adapted from the best Greek history authors like Herodotus and Xenophon. Initially, these are comprised of simple sentences, which eventually become more complex, before reaching the complexities of language seen in original greek. The pairing of the two books is a comprehensive, but quite heavy approach to learning greek and therefore are good if you have someone to assist, but are probably not suitable for individual home-learning. Like many ancient greek books, it does refer to the latin occasionally, but not to the extent of many of the books available.
