The model for media reform
|
In this insightful analysis of the problems facing the US media - with obvious implications for people around the world who are fed the output of US-based media conglomerates on a global scale - is the first serious critique of the corporate media that I know of which also sets out a comprehensive plan for democratic reform of a seriously flawed system. It begins to lay out some of the implications of the little-understood 1996 Telecommunications Act, a portentous message for those outside the USA to stop such legislation while they can. The book spells out serious flaws in the US media system, which are being replicated widely in other countries, but remains optimistic throughout about the potential for reform. An entertaining introduction to a complex and mis-understood topic, this does not quite have the academic complexity of McChesneys previous work, or that of Edward S Herman, but the book is pleasantly light, with numerous encouraging ideas. This is an essential contribution to a sparse field of serious literature on the problems of the mainstream media.
