An excellent continuation of the Stormwatch collections.

This is the last of four trade paperbacks collecting writer Warren Ellis' run on 'Stormwatch', a comic about the official United Nations superhuman team in a world both like and unlike our own. In case you don't know, this isn't goody-goody superheroics. The "heroes" are perfectly prepared to kill in pursuit of a greater good, and with their abilities the potential is great, e.g. "Given a day, twenty superhumans could destroy all life on Earth. Stormwatch is the only real superpower of the late twentieth century." In the previous volume the insane Henry Bendix was finally removed from command, and now Jackson King is in charge (which means this volume is tacked on after a major story arc, with stand-alone stories). One of the reasons for reprinting Stormwatch is that it introduces the characters for the phenomenally successful 'The Authority'. The first story in this volume gives us the first appearance of Apollo and The Midnighter. In the second, Stormwatch opens a link to a parallel world where Jack Hawksmoor commands the unit and an imminent alien invasion is discovered. Artwork is fine, especially in the first story where the team that went on to do the early issues of The Authority give us the same use of colour and shadow. The story needs to be read in sequence though - if you read this volume on its own, without already knowing the characters, you'll miss a lot of the drama (and humour).
