Quite good fun
|
Not as good as some of the author's other WWII stories but still an easy light fun read. It is based around the idea that
the Germans planned to kidnap the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, while they were staying in Portugal.
Joe Jackson, an American runs the best bar in Lisbon, that everyone goes to. He has 'dark, wavy, hair, a pale face.
and a slight, ironic quirk that seemed to permantly lift the corner of his mouth'. 'Who fought with the International Brigade in Spain'. Remind you of anyone ?
He rescues Hannah Winter, from the Gestapo. She has a secret to reveal. Joe finds himself rallying to the right cause.
Walter Schellenberg, the SS intellgence officer in charge of the operation comes across as almost an anti-hero. His parting words being 'Am I the only sane man in a world gone mad'.
