I thoroughly enjoyed this book, its not normally something I would go for but I judged the book by the cover,Im glad I did. Horse's Arse is a funny fast paced action packed breeze of a read. The book is very graphic in its depiction of violence and the language is a bit choice so if you're easily offended dont bother,if not, pile in, its a great book.

Red faced and breathless with laughter

I was doing a quiet night shift in a police communications centre when I read this book, as the tears ran down my face and I became breathless with laughter my colleagues put their names down to borrow it after me. I will never look a hamster in the face again. The book is cruel, improper, vicious, incredibly readable and in parts achingly funny.

A REALLY ENJOYABLE LOOK AT POLICING AND LIFE IN THE UK, WHEN BEING A COPPER MEANT ACTUALLY DEALING WITH CROOKS AND VILLAINS AND POLICING THE STREETS, NOT PAPER PUSHING AND ALL THE BO****** SOCIETY DEALS WITH NOW. ALTHOUGH A NOVEL, I'M SURE ITS A PRETTY TRUE REFLECTION OF HOW IT USED TO BE, AS CHARLIE SPENT SEVERAL YEARS WORKING AS A COPPER, BACK IN THE DAY. A GOOD READ AND BLOODY FUNNY!

Good in places

This is a kind of British Choirboys set in some 'Northern Town' in the 70's. It is not a Sweeney meets Life On Mars at all, it is about a bunch of misfit and psycho coppers getting as down and dirty as the bad guys they are trying to nick. It is told in extremes, it is loud rude and, at times, quite funny. Indeed when the book hits its stide, it is very funny, but at times is hit and miss. I suspect that the follow up will be better as the characters have been established and the author can now indulge himself with the story and not the background.
The author is ex-Police but this is not a comment on the Police Service and there is no suggestion it was like this in the 70's, so it should be treated as nothing more then an entertaining romp. Certainly potential for the next one to be very good.

Oh so true!

Having been a Police Officer for 32 years in Hampshire, I can relate to a lot of the book even for us "country yokels" I joined in 74 when you could still "Police". Unfortunately, it's all about stats now and nof about putting the villains away! Apart from that, a very funny book which as I said above, I could relate to a lot of the time. especially the bit about the old female tramp who would piss herself etc. we had a few of them in Southampton to deal with. I also remember the drunks and cells being hosed out with the fire hose? Oh happy days, loved it. Must buy the other!!
