Heartbreak and Triumph: The Shawn Michaels Story (WWE)
I am not a great HBK fan and that is still the case after reading his book, the start about his family and school years give the book a solid base but once he starts to talk about his wrestling the book becomes very linear and self indulgent. The main problem I had is that he did`nt go into much depth about the wrestling, inside and outside the ring, and you could just feel that he could have told us alot more with a greater detail had it not been published by WWE. His hatred for Bret Hart is also too obvious and reflects in some of his comments and gives the book no real sense of truth. He sums up survivor series 1997 until present day in about 50 pages which just seems lazy . I still enjoyed it but if you are wanting a great book on wrestling see Bret Harts book or Pure Dynamite by Tom Billington they are both less censored the latter especially.

Well as a wrestler HBK is definately a legend, as a writer he is intercontinental champ...Not quite world heavyweight champ, that honour remains with the nature boy Ric Flair whose book was far superior.
Shawns book is far from poor, on the contrary, but it lacks the gritty balls that Flair's book hung out on display. You see, Shawn is a born again christian, and as a result is not proud of some of the things he did outside the ring, but where as this would have been awesome reading, it is instead hurriedly washed over with little detail. That is my only gripe with the book, because everything else about the wrestling is outstanding.
Reading about the matches brought back the nostalgic feeling i love about wrestling, re-living the matches I grew up watching. And as for the infamous Montreal screw job....Just buy the book and enjoy that trip down memory lane guided by the showstopper himself.

Shawn michaels may not always get the respect he deserves,some will always blame him for bret harts humilation in montreal,some will say he is too arrogant and some will say he has held the wwe title four times so that doesnt make him a real legend,others will question his years of self destruction while at the same time find fault in his beliefs in God and his new lifestyle,its a hard one to call,but what we have here is a honest account of the mans career from the horses mouth and he spares little in the way of his journey.
His journey is far from trouble free,most of us can recite his career stats no problems but we may not know the pain and self destructive path he followed to get there,painkillers became a large part of his life and that nearly cost him everything,we learn who his best friends are and those he has no time for and of course bret hart is the main focal point in that.
The chapter on the montreal incident is stunning and very honest,shawn does not hide in his role in this and comes out worse than even i thought,he played some part in this let me tell you.
The book is very honest,some would say too honest,if you ever had any doubts that wrestling wasnt fake then you can kick those doubts out the window,hbk tells us all what happens in the build up to a match and more.
If the book had been written before michaels found God then it may have had a more twisted feel perhaps but as it stands michaels embraces the lord when he can here without bashing a bible over our heads as he puts it,this is a great book filled with passion,conviction and honesty,riveting.

I bought this book at the beginning of december and within a two days i had finished it, i honestly couldn't put it down.
I am a fan of wrestling and a fan of HBK but not a huge fan (i admire him rather than adore him). This book gives a great insight into who the pro-wrestling buisness works and in an honest way it shows you the highs and terrible lows that Shawn Michaels suffered. There are also some great stories in there too.
The one thing about this book to fault is that Shawn (or the ghost writer) tends to blow his own trumpet quite alot. I mean nothing to put you off but i just felt that he tended to say that he was the best more than once in the book.
Despite that it still get 5 stars, it gives a great insight into the Screwjob incident, it really places you their and you can almost imagine what it was like that night. Fantastic read really reccomend to all fans of WWE (just maybe not big Bret Hart fans :))

A Great Read!

Shawn Michael's career is one of the most eventful and controversial in the history of wrestling. This book covers from how he got started in wrestling and his early days in Mid-South and AWA right up to his Wrestlemania 21 match with Kurt Angle, and every story, angle and in screwjob in between. Some things you already knew about, some you thought you knew about and some you just wouldn't know unless you were there. It also goes into detail about his personal life and struggles outside of the ring and his turning his life around through finding God and religion. This is a great read for wrestling fans in general, as it openly and honestly tells the story of one of the best and most respected wrestlers ever to step inside a ring.
Buy and read it if you haven't already!
