The story of not just one incredibly brave person but a family of five brave people.
This is written in such a lovely readable way. It's almost as though you were chatting over dinner with Jane and Mike and each were giving you their recollections of the period covered in the book when Jane completed a triathlon, a marathon, the Rome to Home ride, the Florida Ironman and then that unbelievable ride across America.
You can see what an incredible team they make. Mike seemed to know that to motivate her and perhaps almost to keep her alive the challenges that Jane was contuinually set should be inspiring. However each came at a price - real risks to her already frail health and time away from her family. Yet what is absolutely clear is that this whole family is as one -united in their goal to keep Jane around for as long as they can in whatever way they can.
I found myself crying at points where Jane described the sheer agony of the pain she was suffering and yet she still had the courage and the bloody-mindedness to keep going to finish each enormous challenge. I found myself crying again when Jane achieved each new goal she set herself - like reaching the top of Ventoux. And then laughing at the way that both Jane and Mike, through their individual recollections, paint a picture of an utterly normal adult relationship. Despite their unenviable circumstances, they argue and frustrate each other like any other married couple I know! There's also laughter to be had in the way that Mike particularly describes their relationship with their kids, especially their two teenage daughters!
If you want a book that stops you feeling sorry for yourself after a bad week at work, one that makes you get out there and just enjoy every day or one that inspires you to attempt the impossible- then this is for you.
