A gripping white knuckle debut from Gary McMahon
|
Rough Cut is the debut full length novel from Gary MacMahon, I devoured this short novel in one evening and thoroughly enjoyed it, no, it is not without fault but Gary's breakneck pace keeps the writer hurtling along through his bleak worldview towards the denouement.
The writer I was most reminded of was primetime James Herbert...Not something to be ashamed of!
A cracking good start from Gary MacMahon...I'm looking forward to his next full length book.

Last of the video nasties...

A very clever, very nasty, elegantly written and thoroughly gripping horror story. Ramsey Campbell is not wrong about the atmosphere that hangs over the book, and the sense of dread the story generates builds steadily as it moves towards to a thrillingly unpleasant climax. There's a strong whiff of Campbell's early novels and Robert Holdstock at his nastiest to this tale, and the discerning horror fan will likely devour it in a single sitting. More proof that the novella is a far more suitable length for a horror story than the bloated doorsteps that seem more traditional. After a brief prologue the tale builds up to a high gear and steadily accelerates towards its final shattering impact, without any diversion, distraction or waste. The central conceit is well worked out, and everything that stems from it seems inevitable by the tale's end.
A magnificent debut from a fine writer. I'm looking forwards to his next book.
