An altogether fascinating read

My grandfather worked in the Northumberland coalfield for years, mainly at Bedlington 'A' pit and has a number of books on the collieries of the North East, as well as a number of books about mining and railways in general, of which I found this one to be the most interesting. It has a large number of photographs of what were once everyday scenes that have now disappeared altogether, offering a glimpse into an industrial world that no longer exists. It shows (especially in the photographs of Backworth Colliery itself), the rise of the coal mines from a collection of stone huts and wooden headgears, to the huge industrial complexes that they became in the 1920's and 30's, to the decay and eventual death of the industry in the latter part of the last century.
