Still the BEST
|

The guide is still the bible of record collecting. It defines the values, compiled by the experts, and used by the best sellers. Gives realistic prices and is a MUST for anyone wanting to value their collection. Full marks!

Lazy, irresponsible, should be much, much better!

The undernoted is my review for the 2000 edition of this book, and it is still relevant to this new edition. "Still the best guide there is, this book does however need to get its identity sorted out. Does it want to be the biggest or the best? A bit of selective editing, especially of older entries, would not go amiss; neither would a little more care and completeness with new additions. Overall, prices are reasonably accurate - but this is inevitable, because in many cases this book effectively sets the prices, rather than merely listing them. However, they do tend towards overvaluing most items (possibly anticipating future increases between the compilation and release of the guide). Unfortunately this makes the guide more of a sellers' tool than a buyers guide. Its position as the UK "bible" has an effect on prices which the authors should be more aware of, and hopefully the next edition, due out before the end of the year, will address this. As I said earlier, still the best there is, and still an indispensible tool for sellers and buyers alike, but...." One further anomaly I have noticed is that the prices in the guide do not always coincide with the prices which they quote in their (increasingly obscurist and irrelevant) monthly magazine. This is a lazy piece of work, probably the poorest edition of this publication yet. They really must try harder.

The Best Price Guide In the World!

As a companion to the essential "Record Collector" magazine, this definitive price guide, published annually, is a must-buy for any serious record collectors.
While its focus is mostly on UK-based releases (it is a UK publication, after all), it is extremely comprehensive, covering thousands of artists, big and small, for all records deemed to have a value of £4 or more.
I have found it an invaluable tool for pricing my record collection of mainly independent and alternative rock acts, which are given just as much in-depth coverage as major artists such as The Beatles or Elvis.
If you have any interest in how much your record collection might be worth, you need look no further than this guide.

Not what I expected

Please note that this book only covers record and CD releases in the UK. Unfortunately, it does not say this in the review. I could only find about 3% of my record collection in this book. Also, the layout is not the most user-friendly. With popular artists such as The Beatles and Madonna there are so many sub-categories it makes it difficult to find a specific record(s) you may be searching for. There is a Penguin guide to rare records which covers US releases as well as UK and I find this much easier to comprehend and consequently more time-efficient. If your record collection consists mainly of UK releases this is the ideal book but for anyone who owns a selection of US releases aswell don't expect to find them listed in this book. May I recommend the above suggestion instead.
