Before I read this book, I did not even know what a Bee Bole was. The book gives an interesting outline of the history of bee boles, some unusual folklore surrounding bees and an extensive summary of the sites that might be of interest in the South West of England including some fascinating pictures both in black and white, and in colour. There are also some fascinating inventories from the 16th and 17thC where people left their bees and equipment in their will or estate. Most fascinating of all was the practice of 'telling the bees' which is outlined in the book, where a hive is informed of the beekeeper's death, and how it must be performed I am biased, I guess - I am related to the author, but I did find it absolutely fascinating. If you or a loved one is interested in beekeeping from yesteryear, then this would make an ideal present.
