Customer Reviews:
Long-winded & rambling epic
Judging by prior reviews, Melanie Rawn is either an author you love or hate. I think if you are the sort of fan who likes to buy your fantasy epics by the kilo, and whose idea of heaven is the slow unwinding of a convoluted plot, then this is very much up your street.

Although other reviewers have praised her characterisation, I found her style rather dry and uninvolving. Action scenes are few and far between, and she rarely indulges in lingering, atmospheric descriptive passages. So on the whole - if, like me, you have a preference for taut action fantasy or high melodrama then you should stick to Martha Wells or Janny Wurts.

A good start to a promising series
Rawn has created an original story and used interesting concepts in this series. If you feel like buying a fantasy book I would recommend this one- you get your money's worth. Not only is the book a pretty hefty size, but the plot is rich and the characters vivid. I felt just as if I were there as various characters went through ordeals and adventures.
But it is not an adventure story in the whole war and blood sense. It is more subtle and this does not make the plot any less potent. I thoroughly recommend this to any fantasy reader-regardless of preferences in the type of fantasy. It has definitley left a mark on me- a sign of an excellent book in my opinion.
Just give it a try, no one's forcing you to, but at least then you can make your own judgement.
An original and compelling story that you can't put down
This book is the first in a trilogy of which the final book is not yet published. I found it a gripping read and although it is rather large, read it in less than a week. The story is elaborately told with each character developing into a close friend if you like. I seriously recommend this series, no matter what kind of fantasy you might normally read. Although it's a bit hard to get into at first, you're soon sucked in. Enjoy....
Entertaining, Gripping, a true fantasy novel
This book has everything - It's got magic, two sides fighting each other, mysteries, secrets - lots of those, feisty females and a love story.

It's the first book I've read by Melanie Rawn and I'm hooked. In my opinion a good book is one that you can't/don't want to put down, that makes you want to read it when you're doing other things. This is one of them.

The characters are fully fleshed and believable - they make you care what happens to them. The author is also not afraid to kill off good characters and has also added several characters who are gay/lesbian, this is a nice touch. The society is matriarchal which is a bit of a change, although the women aren't raging feminists either, just strong and know what they want.

Ms Rawn also manages to include small humerous parts that you don't realise are funny at first, comments by the characters.

The book does dot about a bit, introducing you to different people, but this is so you get to know them sepaerately. Ms Rawn does a nice job of bringing characters together and also putting in small clues or hints that you remember when you get to a certain part.

The opening pages did give me the idea that the main male character would end up with one of the main female ones and in this I was correct - this was rather too obvious.

I was going to give this book 5 stars, but the latter point brings it to 4, I'm sure further installments will make me wish I had given it 5 !!

It's a good thick book, which I like, they keep me entertained for much longer but at no point did I think, this is unneccessary, it does need to be as long as it is.

Of her usual high standard
I have to agree with two of the reviews below and can't believe the other one! Rawn writes with a complexity that matches that of real life and real people that brings belief to a fantasy World. You feel for the characters and wish them the best, but as ever life is made difficult, and you keep turning the pages to see how situations are resolved. I love it.
