The Essential Book!
|
I got this book a while back and wow!
I am a professional design engineer, and thought I knew allot about maintenance, I was wrong.
After reading this book cover to cover a number of times on the way to work (train) I set about using it to set my guitars/ bass's up. Now each and every one of them not only sounds infinitely clearer and more even then ever before (I use Seymour Duncans by the way). What's more, they feel and play better than I have ever had them. I have also picked up so much knowledge about guitar repair and setup that I didn't even know existed.
In short, if you play guitar or bass, you cant afford not to buy this book. The £10 cost is like a very cheep universal upgrade!

What to expect from this book.

This book is packed with insight and advice into setting up a guitar but doesn't have clear chapters, a glossary, an index or figure numbers beneath photographs. Does this matter? No, it's not a manual. It's chatty and informative and that makes it very easy to read. If you want to only read the paragraphs that apply to your particular make of guitar and race headlong into setting it up, this book is going to frustrate you. It's not laid out to let you do that, which I think is wise. By reading the book you're serving a sort of apprenticeship, looking at examples, helping to reduce any potential recklessness, and that can only be of benefit to your musical instruments. There are neat tips about cleaning solutions or using masking tape, making your own tools and lots more further reading discussed. This book does deliver what the title says. You will have to be prepared to learn a lot more than the intellectual steps involved in tweaking your guitar but by reading around the subject (just in this book) will increase your confidence and attention to detail. If you like the idea of setting up guitars then this book is a brilliant start. I believe it will continue to be useful and insightful long past the first read. The fret radii templates at the back of the book are really useful and I imagine difficult to acquire, unlike the household tools used in the book.

Never pay for a pro setup again.

As an indication of how useful this book is, it's the first book i've ever been inclined to write a review for. It's very simple, you pick up your guitar, this book, work through Dan's checks / setups on the neck / nut /bridge / intonation etc etc and at the end you have a guitar that plays like you never thought it could. Nearly every example has useful pictures and the style is unintimidating and relaxed. In 9 month of owning this book, i have gone from only daring to change the strings to doing full setups for friends and colleagues with no problem. If you've ever asked anything about what is wrong with your guitar then you need this.

Every electric guitarist should have one.

A great book for the electric guitarist. Maybe you will always go to your local guitar shop for setup work, maybe this book will get you doing it for yourself. Either way, you should get this book for two reasons: 1) It will make you realise the importance of a good setup and 2) it will make you understand your guitar a lot better than you thought you did. Great explanations and useful pictures. It is still scary taking the Allen keys to your axe but I have improved my Telecaster's handling using this book and will be using it again in future.
