the real warrior princess!

gwenllian is an interesting book that tells the little known story of a welsh noblewoman who fought against the Norman Conquest of Wales. Although somewhat too romanticized, nonetheless this is a gripping account of what life must have been like under the yoke of the Norman overlords. My only other quibble is that their are a few unsubstantiated assumptions about Gwenllian, for instance her depiction as a blue eyed blonde; shades of another more recent 'welsh' princess with her own tragic story, perhaps?! Still, it's a rattling good tale for all that, and Peter Newton did his absolute best in fleshing out the bones of this half forgotten story. A must for medieval fans!
