As a Vikram Seth fan I had to buy this book, and I was not disappointed. On the whole I prefer his novels, with "A Suitable Boy" high on the list of the best books I've ever read. But I've loved everything he's written and this is no exception. It is filled with imagery from China, India and the States. Seth manages to capture the different essences of these places with his words, transporting the reader through the lives and situations he describes. Don't be put off if poetry is not your thing, after all, who would have believed one could read a whole novel in verse (and love it) until Seth produced "The Golden Gate". This little book is worth having in any Seth collection where you can dip into it from time to time.
