But is it NEW?
Reed's book has been published to rave reviews, but does it really contain anything NEW? As an HR practitioner, there's nothing here that I haven't seen or heard before. If you are an HR manager struggling to justify your agenda to a disinterested board of directors, then this collection of examples and theories may be useful to you. But I'm not sure how much a true HR professional could really learn from this work.

Big ideas and never predictable

As an HR practioner myself, I've spent much of my career bemoaning the lack of innovation in what is often described as a backward area of business. This book goes some way to redressing the balance. With practical examples from other (more innovative) areas, the author points the way to a dynamic future where HR drives businesses rather than simply serving them. An underlying message is that HR is not merely an administrative function. It is, essentially, the part of the business responsible for acquiring and maintaining the company's most valuable asset - people. And as such, HR deserves the kind of creative thinking that this book proposes. It is big on ideas - and that makes it a cat amongst the HR pigeons.

Inspirational Designs on HR

A thought provoking, inspirational book. Much easier to read than many I have battled through during my CIPD studies. As Peter Wickens says in his review in People Management magazine, "Reed sets out to provide opportunities and gives so many examples of innovative practices that no one can fail to find half a dozen or more that will inspire action."

Unconventional thinking that will challenge the plodders
This book is characteristic of Alec Reed - exciting, non-conformist and passionate in the manner he attacks his subject. This book will certainly shake some who prefer order over innovation. It's typical of the charm of Alec Reed that he wants to acknowledge everyone involved. The industry needs more trailblazers like this - but no doubt others will try to snipe at his success. A great read - both in terms of HR - and creative thinking. Highly recommended.

Entertaining, practical and thought - provoking

Alec Reed takes us on a tour of the most innovative examples of innovative HR practice both here and in the USA. The book illustrates how important it is to be innovative at all stages of the employee / employer relationship. The main strength of the book is its practical and inspiring "can-do" approach to making a difference within organisations of all sizes. There are countless examples of HR innovations in each chapter and the narrative is high-tempo and entertaining. Personal anecdotes from Alec's own business experience provide amusing illustrations in this entertaining look at successful innovtaions in HR. Above all, the book is practical, and I personally found the Innovative Recruitment Process and "How to develop YOUR Employer Brand" very useful.
