Good solid fantasy adventure
|
This is a good, solid fantasy adventure story. Many fantasy novels are not well written, riddled with cliche, boring in places and/or silly in others. Not so here. The main character is believable consistent, and not just a 2D hero with a shiny sword. The supporting cast also have flesh on the bones, and even some very minor characters are intriguing, you get the feeling that the author has imagined each one fully in his mind before writing about them. I particularly like the way the author describes the character's thoughts, motives and observations.Mr. Watt-Evans' style is just right, not ponderous, not frivolous, and his pace and level of environmental description keep you turning the pages without wondering if you have missed anything. In short, if you like fantasy adventure, then you will love this.

Tobas has always been considered unlucky. But, when the wizard to whom he is apprenticed suddenly dies, leaving him half trained and with only a single spell, his situation becomes desperate. Setting off to the more advanced lands of Ethshar, Tobas hopes to find make a life for himself. But, what can a wizard do with only one spell? Adventure and danger await Tobas, and it just might be a that single spell will suffice... This is the third book I have read by Lawrence Watt-Evans, and it is just as excellent as the others. I found the story fascinating, and could not put the book down until I reached the end. I loved the characters, the setting, and Mr. Watt-Evans' fascinating magic system. This is a wonderful story, one that I highly recommend to any D&D or other RPG player, or to any other fan of high-magic adventures!

I loved this. The very idea of a magician who can't actually do much, yet depends on his skills (or more precisely, his single skill of arson by magic) to make a living, is hilarious, and the author has handled it well. The story had me captivated. It's a lighthearted but not satirical piece of fantasy fiction, the first I've read by this author, and I went and bought some more right away.
