Once again, Tennant has given us a book with no introduction, afterword, or anything except various strips of THE FIFTH WAVE, the cartoon best known for its appearances in various For Dummies books. While some will be familiar to readers of the series, this book contains 126 strips, enough to provide fresh material to most readers. Even when 'technical' topics are covered, the strips are aimed at a broad audience ('I *swear*, Larry, no one knew there was a compression chip in the virtual-reality helmet!') Topics range from Network Jones and the Lost File of Wendy to the duck hunter who bags a flying toaster, and from Real Programmers to how to tell if you're *not* a cyberholic. Buddy Diskk, Computer Comedian, appears 4 times, more than in later books (Tennant doesn't need to crack jokes to be funny). MousePad Land is going through hard times since the big trakball moved in outside town. Some strips feature kids, although not as many or quite as clever as in DOWNLOADED, the next book. On the other hand, VERSION 2.0 has more strips featuring dogs - the floating pointer benchmark suite is worth seeing. :) VERSION 2.0 even combines dogs with desktop publishing (Rags can now say it his way in a personal greeting card).
